Doctor Charles Carrillo, Ph.D.

Nomination: For his role as Santero in the field of Spanish Colonial Sacred Art

Dr. Charles M. Carrillo, or Charlie as he is better known to his friends and collectors, is a man of many talents and accomplishments. He received his undergraduate master’s and doctorate degrees in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico. But he is best known for his Spanish Colonial New Mexican retablos and other traditional art forms.

He has taught for many years at the University of New Mexico and has spoken to groups all over the country on the traditional ways of Hispanic New Mexico. In 1994, LPD Press of Albuquerque published a book about Charlie and his work — Charlie Carrillo: Tradition & Soul. Charlie’s first book was on Hispanic New Mexico Pottery — an extension of his doctorate. He also wrote essays in Our Saints Among Us and Nicholas Herrera: Visions of My Heart.

In 2004, he wrote Saints of the Pueblos to coincide with the exhibit by the same name that opened at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. The exhibit will travel for years to museums around the world. During the same year he partnered with José Antonio Esquibel to write Tapestry of Kinship to go with an exhibit by the same name at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe. Charlie has written many articles for Tradicion Revista Magazine that promote the art and culture of Hispanic New Mexico.

But Charlie’s first love is his art. He has won Best of Show at Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe as well as many First Places and other awards. His work is in the permanent collections of museums such as: Albuquerque Museum, Regis University Collection, Autry Museum, Heard Museum, Smithsonian Museum, National Hispanic Cultural Center, Maxwell Museum, Denver Art Museum, and many more. He has won awards in the National Sculpture Competition, The New Mexico State Fair, La Fiesta De Colores, to name a few. He has been profiled and written about in a number of magazines, books and newspapers. He has won the Governor’s Award for the Arts in New Mexico, as well as the Mayor of Santa Fe’s Award and the University of New Mexico Alumni Award.

Charlie’s work has been in exhibits in Albuquerque, Taos, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City, Denver, Golden, Colorado Springs, Las Cruces, El Paso, Phoenix, Miami, and many other cities. He has been in numerous traveling exhibits which feature the santos of New Mexico. He has taught hundreds of artists about their traditions and the techniques used to make santos.

Charlie lives in Santa Fe with his wife Debbie who is an award winning potter and his children Estrellita and Roán who are award winning artists in their own rite.
