Nomination:
For her role as Canadian Contemporary Artist --- especially in the field of Sacred Imagery
Sister Jeanne Vanasse majored in art at the College of Notre Dame-de-l'Assomption in Quebec, Canada, before entering the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in 1941. By the mid 1950s, Sister Jeanne had developed her own unique artistic style thanks to her mentor and teacher, the famed Jean-Paul Lemieux. She taught at the sisters' college for eight years during which time she designed the chapel windows for the Motherhouse in Nicolet, Quebec.
Beginning in 1968, she taught art at Three Rivers College for twenty years. During that time, she developed versatility in iconography, sculpting, oils and printmaking. She studied iconography in France and lithography in Switzerland.
"As a woman religious" she says, "I have learned to love silence, mystic expression, music, the invitation to do better, and to approach God like the spouse in the Song of Songs."
